... im happy with you playing project manager

"Playing" being the operative word. Even when that was my title I was more of a "Muddle-Through-by-Making-People-Giggle" Manager . I just thought some definites would be useful.

@Neon & DUNK - You've thought this through. I'm with you two .

@Riley - You're right, of course.

My thoughts, for what they're worth. We'll need a map which will give us plenty of time to set up and have some fun. My understanding is that the timings "within" CP and PL maps are fixed. Arena restricts classes. I reckon that means CTF maps. I suggest one of the quaysides of 2Fort. Following Neon's suggestion, I reckon we'll need about 5 dispensers to span the width convincingly, as the "net", but we'll still be able to move around the "net"on the bridge or through the building. The water and buildings will give our Scout (Neon ) a chance of breaking the inevitable fall. That would be useful if we go for the "Scout Height Record", as well Whaddya think?

The server needs a password, the time limit set to "very long" (like our current 2Fort server) and, if the admins are very nice to us, they could apply "Moggie's hax" to let Engis build more than one dispenser. That way we'd need fewer Engi's allowing more folk to have fun as Pyros & Scouts.

This is quite a big ask to be done on the fly, so perhaps we should confirm with The Mighty Ones that they'll do this for us. It might also be good if it could be made a UKMD event on Steam to let everyone know it's happening.

So, may I pass the baton to that bewitcher of men, Melon, to have a chat with CAWA or Jim and enchant them into helping Then we can set a date, time & place. Is that ok, Ms. Melon?

And if everyone thinks this a pile of poo, please tell me. They certainly did when I was a "Project Manager"

i think i can change my L4D server to tf2 and that should sort out maps and passwords, altho I am a complete ass at the admining side of things.

maybe one of our map makers (or their sister) could sort us out a basic map with 2 platforms and a ramp up onto them to allow us to play.how cool would it be to airblast someone over that crazy train map J!m posted about

Thanks, Melon, but please do not rearrange this for me. If Jim's been good enough to do the nonsense for us, let's not mess him about. I just wanted to make sure it happened 'cos it's about time we got a UKMD TF2 vid up on our YouTube channel Now it's happening, the most I could have contributed is a dispenser! I'll leave the Juggling to those more suited (i.e. anyone but me ). Just make sure someone's got "demo" running

If I can help in the mean time, give me a shout. Oh, and here are the rules of "Volley Scout":

Each team is made up of an equal number of Pyros.

Teams serve alternately, i.e. get a Scout in the air.

Once the Scout is in the air, he can be juggled by as many Pyro's on the team as required.

Once the Scout has crossed the net (i.e. dispensers ) the other team must "catch" him and. again, may keep him in the air with as many Pyros as required.

Teams lose a point to the opposition if :
  • The Scout touches the ground on their side of the net;

    • The Scout lands on or touches any of the buildings or falls in the water;

    • The team incinerate the Scout
    Play continues until the teams are incapacitated with laughter or just forget the score

    Cheers

    I'll be there. And I like the rules, especially losing a point if you incinerate the scout

    Infact, maybe we could make it that anyone who kills the scout has to switch places with them?

    Oh, the rules don't mention anything about the scout's double jump, so be nice to me and I might do my best not to land on your side

    I like the cut of your jib, Neon You obviously like making up rules as much as I do. Were you ever a board gamer or table-top gamer before these new-fangled video games came along

    Seriously, I only put those rules up as a joke. If you just get a Scout back and forth across the net it will be fantastic. And a Scout's view of being ubered, blasted into the air and double-jumping should be something to behold

    Nope, mainly because these 'new-fangled' video games came along before I did .

    However, while I don't necessarily like making up rules, I do like not being set on fire

    Melon, when you reschedule it, could it not be Saturday evening and definitely not a Sunday? Realised a little late I wouldn't be able to get online last night anyway, and I have work Sundays...

    (of course, you could just find another Scout )

    look lets not get all rigid about this.

    i am sure we can password a server for a weekend, its rare to have more than 2 full anyway(do we not still have the passworded ones anyway that are unused)

    if we are all noobing about and there seems to be enough that we can give this ago. 4 v 4 i think is min to start with 1 engi 3 pyros, or 2 engy and 2 pyro's

    lets start small and see if we can build it up to 5-6 airblasts from different pyros. love the idea of a purely vertical map, with ledges for the pyros to stand on and blast people upward.

    another variation,
    Pyro tennis, this is on youtube but lets try it with 4 players, in a diamond (like baseball) and we can try and blast a rocket between 4 player. that could work with 12 red pyros in a big circle with a few blue soldiers spamming rockets at us.

    To make sure we had a serviceable number attend this little foray, I did a bit of PMing of interested parties. A band of valiant TF2ers are going to do their best to be around at:

    14:30, SATURDAY 29TH NOVEMBER

    Was that loud enough You are welcome to come along for the fun. There are no shortage of things to try (see DUNK's post above) .

    @DUNK - Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I've been trying to confirm with CAWA.

    Cheers

    Riley tells me that a Steam event for Pyro Juggling has just popped up. A teeny error there. Let's face it, one Saturday looks very much like another. You want to try retirement - every day looks very much like the other (it is Wednesday, isn't it )

    Just to confirm it's : 14:30, SATURDAY 29TH NOVEMBER i.e. next Saturday. Quite a few people couldn't make it today.

    Cheers

    Despite a wobble, with a few "can't make it"s (including Melon ), people are still keen for this to go ahead. So, just to remind you, it's scheduled for Saturday, kicking off around 14:30. If you can make it, that would be great. CAWA's going to give me the server and password on Friday, so I won't have time to PM. I'll publish the details on the "|UKMD| General Team Fortress 2 Chat" forum in the hidden UKMD-only area.

    If you're a Sponsor or Victim and want to join in, post or PM me and I'll make sure the info's on your forums, as well.

    Here's a reminder of some of the things that have been suggested:

    DUNK - "i think we should be able to get a team of pyros, have them all stand in a row and then have the opposing team pyroblasted along the line. like some big air powered moving people by air thing."

    DUNK & Neon "i also want to try pyro tennis, ping pong a scout between 2 or more pyro's ... All the pyros would have to be the same team, obviously, and you'll need a net. Maybe a row of dispensers? You can refill your ammo that way too ...One thing though: I think the Scout will need some people on his team, because everytime a pyro misses the scout will take fall damage. Plus I wouldn't put it past them to set me on fire... So, you could either have a medic running around and getting in the way OR: Most of the scout's team are engineers. You get a whole row of dispensers for your net and the scout gets to heal between serves (will need at least one engie on the pyro's team though, since they can't use the scout's dispensers)"

    Barbeque & Neon - "Try getting some medics too, don't know if it made a difference but i ubered someone on badwater then ended up being shot about a mile in the air, 3 times the height of the upstairs bit on badwater! ... When you're going for height, you could use more than airblast; have a heavy shooting them as well, or a soldier with good aim. If you use a scout again, they could cheat a bit and double jump."

    Nick - "how about setting up a chain of pyros from one end of a map to the other and seeing if its possible to bounce someone all the way."

    DUNK - "Pyro tennis, this is on youtube but lets try it with 4 players, in a diamond (like baseball) and we can try and blast a rocket between 4 player. that could work with 12 red pyros in a big circle with a few blue soldiers spamming rockets at us."

    Looking around YouTube, most "Tennis" vids are with rockets or flares. I couldn't find any with more than 2 Pyros (see DUNK's final suggestion). I've seen a couple of Heavy juggling vids but nothing on the scale we could achieve if we put our minds to it.

    If your PC can stand it, please demo all or part of the session, especially if you're taking an active part as Pyro, Scout, Soldier or whatever. I doubt I'll be anything but an Engi or Medic, so I'll have the observer's point of view.

    Which brings me to the "YouTube" bit of this exercise. I am very happy to put any stuff together into a vid. I've made a few vids over the years. However, I'm only a WMM user and don't have any posh video editing software. Or claim to be an artistic genius. So, if anyone's good at this stuff and is willing to volunteer, I'll happily coordinate getting the demos to them.

    See you there.

    The main suggestion has been Scouts but I love the idea of a Spy becoming invisible mid-air. That should cause some confusion. Nice one, Shadam

    Well, that was insane

    Red Base on Badwater played host to Red vs. Blu rocket/flare/grenade tennis. Amongst the madness, there were demonstrations of brilliant volleys, accurate aiming and some outright flukes

    The cooperation between the teams was exemplary until "30 seconds left in the mission" was announced when TF2 instincts kicked in and a massacre usually ensued.

    I can take little credit for this display of extraordinary skill as I was trying to record these exploits inbetween keeping my dispenser in one piece and being slapped, timebombed and airblasted by all and sundry.

    A huge thank you to all who came along and, especially, to CAWA for sorting the server. I had an absolutely hilarious afternoon.

    I've got a lot recorded but I know others had demo running as well. If you could upload it to some web space, somewhere, I'll grab it. If you don't have access to a few MB's in the ether, let me know and you can upload to my FileFront page.

    Again, I'll happily string this stuff together into a vid but if anyone else would like to do it or, better still, is good at it, just say.

    Thanks again for a most enjoyable couple of hours.

    Cheers
