Are you running XP? If so, have you applied SP3 recently? Did it install cleanly? SP3 certainly updates a selection of .sys files. I'm no expert but if you get desperate, you could restore to SP2 and try running the program/game again. Wait to see if clever folk reply first, though

Cheers

If you get no good/ quick fixes you could always do the delete / reinstall thing (sorry best I can come up with.

Alternatively if you manage to make a note of the BSOD details you could always google it and see if anyone out there has a solution ??

Good luck anyways

The few BSOD I've had with Vista have been due to driver issues.

You say above this "only started happening when I updated my drivers". That sugeests to me you need to rollback the drivers you updated to the old versions. The "nd-----.sys" implies a network device. So if you updated the driver for a network card, modem etc. start with that.

You could also try a system restore back to a time you weren't getting BSOD.

If you hit the Pause/Break key, it should freeze on the error message, otherwise, there is an option to turn autorestart off...

I will check where it is in Vista, but Xp it is under Right Click My Computer -> System Properties -> Advanced - > Startup and recovery settings - > Tick box automatically restart

i will get back to you when I find it on Vista

I've not used Vista but you can probably find the process name that Vista thinks caused the crash (the nv---.sys thingy) in the system event log. On XP you can view the event logs by right clicking on My Computer > Manage > expand the Event Viewer section > click on "System" to show the entries in the system event log. There should be info on the crash in one of the events in there.

My job involves troubleshooting crashes on Windows servers and 90% of the time the process listed that caused the crash is a system process, so not much help, but occasionally the process listed will be something like an anti virus software executable/dll so gives you a good idea where the problem lies.

You could always go back to an older system restore point on your PC for a quick and dirty fix.

As Dunk says NV---.sys sounds suspiciously like an Nvidia driver to me.

i have only ever had 3 BSOD's

The firsat was when Gwee was round and having a go on it

The second was the exact moment after:
"|UKMD| Gwee@laaaag has joined the game" appeared in Tf2

and the third was after Gwee shot me with a critical rocket. all 3 in the last 8 days.

If the sys file that's giving the trouble is nvlddmkm.sys then it might be something between your motherboard and gfx card heating up. There're alot of people on the internet with a similar problem and none of the solutions to the problem are common to all.

I know I've had the problem and it went away when I installed some better cooling onto my motherboard since the south bridge was constantly overheating (at about 6hrs uptime).

For reference I have a
Intel QX6850
2Gb RAM
8800GTX
NForce 680i motherboard
