As Christmas is close my parents have been asking me what i would like, they originally suggested an ipod but now that ive got a motorbike ( ) i rarely listen to my current mp3 player, it would seem pointless getting an ipod and hardly use it >_>

Anyways,

I was thinking of asking for a 9800GT as i would get a hell of a lot more use out of it compared to an ipod

Would it be a good upgrade from an 8600GTS?

Current spec

Asus M2n-E SLI motherboard
AMD Athlon 64+ X2 6000+ (3.0Ghz)
2GB DDR2 Ram (kingston i think )
Nvidia 8600GTS
Coolermaster 600w PSU
160GB Hard Drive ( no clue who makes it)

Would there be a noticeable difference compared to an 8600GTS?

Im planning on getting a new monitor sometime next year, this 8600 can barely run games at 1280x1024 so im looking for something to upgrade to

Cheers

Get a 4850, costs a bit more, but much better than a 9800GT.

Or if you really want a Nvidia card, get a 9800GTX+ at least for a decent difference.

I have a 8600GTS and I am going to get a 4870 soon which should last a few years.

One o' these is what I'd suggest, also from this site if possible, although delivery might be expensive, I know it is around £8 for me, in Britain.

Prices of delivery:

link

I've never had a problem with this site, bought nearly my whole PC from there, only thing bad was I got 1 faulty stick of RAM, but thats' Corsair's fault.

Don't go ATI. They have slightly faster pixel pipelines but don't support PhysX. Have a look at a 260OC (The one with the extra pixel piplelines turned on)

I stopped getting presents from my parents when I was 14

The most I can hope for now is a £20 note!

I order most of my bits from Overclockers: link. Delivery isn't the cheapest from them though - about £8 for the basic "next day delivery". Check out their forum (from the links at the top right of their homepage) which is a real goldmine for hardware info. Maybe try posting a thread for their advice on there, telling them your price range and what you want to do with the card?

The 260 and 4870 perform pretty much equally, each is better in different games. The 4870 is, on average, £30 - £50 cheaper.

You're looking at at least £180 though for a decent one.

Thanks Although I claim no credit at all for creating the avatar! When I signed up to the forums I just Googled "free forum avatar" or something like that and found it on a site within about 30 seconds of searching. It made me laugh out loud for real when I saw it so I instantly decided that's the avatar for me!

FYI I upgraded from an 8800GT to a GTX260 (the 216 version) last week and I can now run Crysis with all the graphics settings maxed out. That card did cost me £240 though. The 8800GT has been fine up until the latest batch of games came out (Crysis Warhead, Farcry 2, Fallout 3) when I suddenly found I could only run them at medium graphics settings. Strangely after the upgrade to a GTX260 Fallout 3 still doesn't run great though so I think it's just a badly written game.
