I have recently changed my ISP to sky broadband, the router they have sent me out is a total bawbag and i cant get a signal 3m away from the router. I have a belkin router that is an adsl router, and so is the sky. Does anyone know how to"daisy chain" them so i can connect to my belkin and use the sky as a gateway? I really need the help if anyone can manage to stick a guide up. Ive tried goin from ethernet to ethernet but they are both adsl so it didnt work.

A little help here ppl?

andy,
are you wanting to use your Belkin as a wireless access point.
should be pretty easy but i think you will need to turn off dhcp(and if possible the entire modem) just leacing the wireless bit going.
can you not do a factory reset on your belkin and plug it in rather than the sky one. should work if both are adsl??
you may need to stick your username etc into the belkin but cant see that being a big issue.

Hmm, first i was thinking they are both adsl routers it could be possible for you to write down the settings (ip's, username, password etc...) from ur sky router and enter them in the belkin router and just do away with the sky router. This might work but the isp will probably be locked to the sky routers mac address soooo, we may have to get technical

First you will have to go into your sky routers config page (connect directly from your pc, go to network connections and for the network card you are connected with right click status and go to the support tab and find the default gateway) copy the default gateway into your browser and hit enter. You will now be asked for username and password. Without knowing the make and model of the router i don't know what the defaults are for this but the user name is usually always admin and passwords are usually 1234, password, admin etc... Once in the setup page for the sky router find the wireless section and disable wireless as you wont need it. Now disconnect this router and plug in your belkin one.

Repeat the intial steps and then find the lan page, you will need to disable DCHP and set up a manual IP and subnet mask for port 1 on your router (dont not use the wan port or this wont work). You will have to set this routers default gateway to the ip address of the sky router with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. and the ip address will have the first three segments the same as the sky router with the last segment set to one number higher than the sky routers ip. You will know have to setup your wireless options on the belkin router.

Once done you will have to use a Cat5e Crossover cable to connect between port 1 on your sky router and port 1 on your belkin router. A standard Cat5e patch cable wont work so if u dont have a crossover cable you'll have to nip to your nearest pc shop and buy one Once your all connected give it a try and see if it works, if not post back with the results then i can see if ive messed up anywhere.

Oh yeah and before doing any of this save all your current settings from your routers then you can restore them if this doesn't work.

Do a google search for the hacked firmware of the router they provided, Its against their T&C to use any other router than the one they provide but reading lots of forums it seems they don't enforce it. ie -( link ) Then when you extract the user name and password you can use it in any router.

I am with Sky Broadband too & have found this site invaluable:

link

I did a quick search & someone else has a similar issue. One suggestion was to check the wireless channel of the Belkin & see if Sky is using the same as there may be interference. It also suggests that it is possible to daisy chain them together, so some more digging might help.

link

As Old-Git says, it is against Sky’s T&C’s to use another router. There is some form of handshake between Sky & their routers as the admin log shows a regular entry & reply. They also have rolled out firmware upgrades remotely, so any non-Sky routers would fail. So I guess they do know, but if they do anything about it is another matter!
