CCleaner rocks you definately need that in your life. link

In fact the makers of CCleaner (Piriform) have another 2 handy little free apps that i fully recommend:

Defraggler - A great free defragging app. link

and:

Recuva - A quality free file recovery tool. link

Get them now everybody

I've got AVG and heard it filters out search results that are potenially danagerous meaning you can't get to certain websites (this is coming from computer scientists who crack games for hobbies)

Anyone else know about this?

A little Gem I stumbled upon recently

MalwareBytes Anti Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org

Has actually helped clean up some machines that Spybot, AVG, AdAware, failed to.

Today I came across a fantastic video tutorial on using an Ubuntu Linux Live CD and Clam AV to disinfect Windows boxes and purge them of nasty critters.

Its handy to be able to do these sorts of offline virus scans because a lot of modern malware is capable of ripping windows antivirus software a new one if you get my drift.

What makes the tutorial doubly good is that it is presented by a fellow Faery called Nixie Pixel

Without further formality I present the link:
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2009/04/21/nixie%E2%80%99s-linux-haxor-quickie-how-to-cure-a-windows-virus-with-linux/

How to cure a windows virus with Ubuntu Linux

Hope it comes in Handy!

I've been using a PXE of Winxp (BartPE ftw) along with Clam AV for a year or so now, just for that very reason

Aye avast and avg are great choices especially on a fresh install, its a shame Norton/Symantec has become a bloated failure in recent times. It just too bloated, makes it easy to sneak something into memory while the AV is tying its shoelaces so to speak.

@DaWhiskers ooh yeah PartPE definately FTW, I dunno what I would do without Bart+Clam AV or Ubu/knoppix+Clam AV in a lot of situations ive had to sort out. Oddly enough most of them involved a dying machine that was using Norton for protection eheheh

The site www.cleansoftware.org hosts a useful catalogue of general utilities that are free and don't install advertisements and other junk.

I know its been mentioned before - but as i'm new here, I felt complelled to add my two cents. As a PC tech (have been building, upgrading etc PC's wince I was 15) I would thoroughly recommend :

Avira (www.free-av.com) over AVG, as in my experience it seems to fidn things that AVG doesnt ...and likewise AVG will find the odd thing that Avira wont find -

Spybot S&D (www.safer-networking.org)
Free spyware remover, although has been playing up a lil recently

And CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com)
A handy util for removing temporary/internet files and also registry cleaning etc.

I find Windows Firewall is ample protection with a decent antivirus etc (however, ZoneAlarm is good, but uneccesary -in my experience)

If you have ANY Norton or Symantec programs - I HIGHLY ADVISE removing it, its pretty much useless, not to mention the fact that it is a VERY resource hungry set of applications!

Many people who I've done tech jobs for in the past recognise the name, but are painfully unaware that Norton write virii (Americanism: plual of virus) and after removing the software will find that their PC will run about 15-30% faster overall after removing all norton/symantec programs. ...there is, however, a catch - they don't make it easy to do so (as eehy try to force customers to stay with them by making the programs hard to remove) they issue removal tools on their site ...so you need to download an app to remove the software (swines!)

Anyways -thats my contribution!

please note to what moggie said in the first post Common Sense, its the most important thing for internet browsing... =]

For anti-virus i use Avast! which i call "reg-ware", its freeware but required you to register before use. I went off AVG when it started filtering websites - as i see that as a firewalls job not anti-virues. Avast: link

For general cleaning stuff (files not registery) CCleaner as many people have mentioned. Personally i don't really clean my registry because i know it causes problems sometimes, so i just relax and don't do it. link

For a firewall, if you have common sense and use it while browsing the internet, windows firewall is fine, but if you don't, then get a third party app. As i don't use one, i cant recommend one, apart from windows firewall =].

To be honest though, most of the cleaning programs use some windows stuff anyway same goes for the defragging applications.
