those 2 that neko reccommends are both great psu's from a respected company

CustomPC magazine says for 800W go for the Seasonic M12D 850W which should be about £166, also the corsair TX850W which should be around £114, but isnt modular.

either way, £500 for a psu is a con

fans.

I bought an antec 1200 case, the best air cooled case money can buy, it has a large 200mm on top, three 120mm fans in the front to draw air in, and two 120mm fans at the back to draw the hot air out.

I also got an optional side 120mm fan to blow air onto my nvidia 295 and an akasa nero Heatsink and fan for my cpu rather than the stock intel one that came with it

TBH mate.. you dont need 850W for that. You are buying a 9600 graph card which wont need that kind of power.
I've built a high spec gaming machine for a gaming company and used the corsair 750W quiet PSU. That machine has the XFX GTX295, AMD 3.2GHz, 4Gb memory (as they use XP pro) and that amount of power is fine.
And seriously, have a look at Microdirect.co.uk some of the stuff your buying is cheaper there.

Corsair, Coolermaster, Enermax and Zalman are the best/most reliable manufacturers out there. I would recommend a psu that has modular cables and a high efficiency rating (because anything over 400w and you noting your leccy bill going up, a lot ).

My recommendations would be either;
Zalman ZM850-HP: link
or
Enermax Revolution 850: link

Both are great power supplies, the Enermax is more expensive because it has higher efficiency, more "gadgets" and is SLI certified but the Zalman can also do SLI quite easily and is extremely quiet, I have one meself

I'm just off out so can't have a proper look yet, but you don't want to get a Q9650, go for a Q9550, save yourself £60, not that much difference between the 2 but the price is a good drop.
Also bump up the GFX card to something like a 4890 or 4870x2 if you can push the budget.
As mentioned by |UKMD| Hebe73 an 800/1000w PSU is a bit of overkill, A quality 650w would do more than enough, I'm running a Q9650 (got a deal so was same price as Q9550) 4GB mem, 2 HDDS, 8800GS and a dvd writer all in a 250w shuttle PSU. Testing it and at idle it uses about 117w and full load uses about 185w.

Post up a budget and I'll will have a look when I get home and spec you something up with balance, the processor is overkill in games because the GFX you mentioned will be holding it back. Do you do any encoding or something that uses all the cores on the CPU?

Wow i'm quite suprised by that. Isnt the mimimum requirements for a 8800 like 400w? I was planning on getting one but I panicked and upgraded my PSU from a lowly 230w one first.

This would be the kind of computer I would be looking at for under £900. You can alway use your current case, hard drives, optical drives etc... which will lower the price even more. You could go for a Core i7 system for just over £900 but this system should/will be more than enough for gaming and video editing. Also you can always add a second video card in later for X-Fire

As an i7 alternative, could probably do better with the money was only a quick spec.

You'd be very shocked how high the ratings are for things and yet how little they use in real life.

Try this, £150 left in the budget to buy yourself a case (personal taste so I'll let you pick) and even a blu-ray player if you want.

My cpu is overclocked to 3.6ghz, that's the power draw from it, it'd be less at stock lol.

and i wouldnt bother with the velociraptor, you'll use up 300gb in no time. get the samsung 1tb drive and use the extra £110 to get a better graphics card

or even a motherboard to plug it all into

1. Socket 478 heatsink
2. 9600 is using ddr2 graphics memory and the 1gb would offer very little benefit due to the low Bus Width.
3. Drop the velociraptor for a nice 1tb drive
4. If you are spending that much i would go i7 really.

You said budget didnt include monitor, you still have £150 to buy a case and keyboard with my suggestion.
You can pick up a nice black LianLi case for about £60-80 and a keyboard for about £30-40.
Leaves about £30-60 for speakers.

Motherboard sound is more than good enough nowadays, I never know why people buy separate ones for 2.1 speakers lol.

For the money it does seem pointless getting a core2quad which is a dead socket and you have no room to upgrade at all. I would try and squeeze an i7 in there.

This would make one hell of a machine. I would definantly recommend buying from scan too. Excellent customer service and delivery.

P.S Anything they don't have in stock gets put on Pre-Order and they send off for the product ASAP and they usually get it within the week.

1. Asus and OCZ dont usually mix :/ my p5e killed 2 sets of OCZ memory and ive heard of other people that cant get OCZ to work in Asus motherboards at all

2. I hate using ATI cards for source games you have to play in directx8 unless you want fogon dust maps, really dark shadows and blocky sprites instead of HDR rays

3. That case is fugly, even worse than the Antec 900 :s

Other than tat looks good
