This class i have played the least and feel that now is as good a time as any to give it a go (probably 'cos i am totally 'noob' at all others).

I have read the Coci guide and will be trying out what he says, but as i have found with my short exp of all things TF2, i watch the video-guides = fully qualified, NOT.

In the short time <30 mins i have spied i seem to get rumbled v easily, or i get 1 backstab then die. Still not sapped anything

I know practise makes prefect, but i would appreciate any guidance from my wiser comunity members, this can and probably should mean take it right back to an A,B,C of spying

All guidance appreciated

ps thanks for providing such a supportive and fun place for a grumpy old git to try out something new

I'm not fabulous at it, but as far as I can tell:

Learn the map layout, learn the high traffic areas (2 fort's bridge, any spawn area of badwater, the channel o' death in dustbowl 3). Those are where you really need to deploy your cloak, and it needs to be off AFTER you leave.
If you see anyone coming towards you while cloaked, hang back a second and make sure they're not going to walk into you. Pyros are a pain for doing this.
If your team is moving in a pack, stick with them in your cloak. They make a lovely fire screen for that angry heavy who's revving up.
You can take out an inexperienced engie by circling his toys and sapping them repeatedly. Newbies won't attack the spy. More sophisticated ones, you might have to try the sap/backstab trick.
Your best bets for disguises are demos and pyros. Disguising as other classes is unexpected and can help, but never go as a spy, scout, heavy or medic. A spy's too obvious, a medic has no ubercharge meter, a scout's too fast, a heavy is onl good for sapping, he'll never catch anyone else up.
Switch disguises whenever you stab someone. Preferably whenever you cloak, really.
Be careful about crying for a medic when disguised. Someone at half health is a bit suspicious anyway.
If they decide to turtle with engies, disguising as an engie confuses EVERYBODY. People won't notice that you're not shooting, half the time.
Personal preference, but especially on payload, I prefer to stab the heavy than the medic healing him. It's much easier, unless the medic's just sitting there.

But mostly it's about timing, for me. Know when to uncloak, know when to back down from an impossible fight and know that when you're rumbled, no amount of cloaking will help you against rockets, flames or rapid weapons, but your pistol might...

I'm not sure what help anything of mine will, I'm none too accomplished but I will try:

Use your cloak wisely. Cloaking at just the right time then doing something unexpected with throw off anyone and everyone. Run, turn a corner, cloak, run back in the opposite direction (When fully cloaked). It works better than most would think.

If you must be in disguise and moving towards your enemy base (The same enemy you are disguised as) run backwards facing your own team, it worked more than I thought it would.

Pyro's, Demomen, Snipers and Engineers will not make you slow down in disguise. (Equal moving speed to spy) Medics and Scouts are faster than a spy, both are bad ideas for disguise.

At the start of the match, disguise yourself as a friendly unit (Your choice which). Enemies are more likely to spy check like crazy when they know you're there, nothing gives you away like seeing a teammate in the enemy's base.

Switching disguises in cloak will not trigger the dust clouds that come with it, nor will it affect your cloak in anyway.

As said before, learn the map layouts. If you plan to drop and kill, you need to be able to spot your enemy, which direction he is running and know roughly where he will run to and how you get there first. Not only that, but knowing shortcuts and even corner cutting will make you more viable to catch up with people.

Run down the sides of hallways.

EDIT: Something else I'll mention and hope you are doing already. When disguised or cloaked, get out your knife, then get out your sapper and use the Quick Weapon Switch button to switch between the two. Speed is of the essence.

haha

My advice to you will be exactly what Jim says but obviously not just me. Just find a server and spectate a few good spies, there's a few that play on the UKMD servers that i've seen. Zero-Sum is a pretty good spy too as is Gentlemen of Equitette or whatever his name is lol.

Secondly, make sure you know the map layout, where all the health packs are, ensure you act as if you were on the other team and NEVER disguise as a scout, medic or spy. Never works.

If you want an in depth guide into how to play Spy, just drop me a PM and i'll go over a few things with you

Hope to see you in-game.

Dunno if people knew you could do this, but I didn't - you can reload when disguised which is better than your character standing around not shooting or changing weapons. Vid below:
NB/ He's reloading, then quickly switching weapons to interrupt the reload.
