there has been a few posts recently with various problems so i thought i would post my thoughts on keeping your pc in tiptop condition and also helping solve those irritating problems
Graphic problems Do these in order
Update your chipset drivers
Intel link
Via link
Keep your DirectX upto date (even u lot with Vista should do this). Download and install the FULL DX (dont update). grab this here link
install GFX drivers
best site imho link

general maintenace
Use something like CC cleaner to remove all the crap, uninstall old apps, fix your registry(always backup, it will prompt u) This is free link
regularly defrag your hard drives. preferably using something like O&O defrag. MS one ok, but not the best.

Also, make sure your PC is getting enough cool air. clean the fan intakes or filters or install extra fans.

and finally, there is a nice little app that allows someone to take control off your PC to help with these sort of probs. certainly something i have used in the past (and while I do not want to spend hours dialled into a pc) if someone is stuck then i am happy to have a look. app from here link

spend some time maintaining your PC and the likliehood of it screwing up are less. backup your registry and set the occasional MS restore point. i dont leave this on all the time. but will run it once in a while, especially after any major install or tweaking.

jim, can you make this sticky in this forum

1 - Defragging is moving files around your hard drive to make it more accesibble to your system and easier to find therefore faster. The reason to clean it is much the same as defragging - to help windows find the right key faster.

2 - The windows registry is where certain bits of information that are specific to that system are stored. It can be anything to programs setting to product keys.
