On the back of Pistols experience with 64bit Vista i decided to take the plunge and last night installed Ultimate on one of my laptops.

Install went well, drivers were easy to find and laptop seems nice and responsive(it already had vista 32bit). A little more tweaking and I will have this running even better. 2gb ram min tho.

Really the laptop install was just a dry run as I have decided to update main PC to 64bit. I have had a few wee problems with it and I am hoping this will help solve the problem (if it doesnt, a new MOBO is going in).

I have 4gb ram so it seems like the right thing to do and as the drivers are in plentyful supply. Will run some CSS video benchmarks before and after. Thankfully all my apps/games are installed on a seperate partition so shouldnt need to much work.

another 4gb ram is planned once I sell old PC and monitor to buy new widescreen monitor

thanks Pistols for the inspiration.

Dunk, good luck is all i have to say, creative has been an isue with x64, and there may be some uncommon peripherals that you will find no longer works.

runs ok though on my 16GB Xeon home workstation

cheers, thats why i wanted to check that i could get chipset, gfx and sound drivers before making the move.
i dont have any peripherals so fingers crossed that the install goes as smoothly as the laptop. dont see why not, and it will only take me half an hour to stick xp back on.

Installed x64 with 2gb at first but recently upgraded to 4gb and the change is amazing! Everything loads so much faster!

Haven't had any problems at all with drivers and have only had problems with a few small apps that refused to run under x64.

That might be as it's a clean install, I find that after a week or so once I've got all my programs and stuff on there it slows down a bit

OS install was a breeze.
say what you want about Steam, but you dont need to reinstall the games in your steam folder. TF2 worked perfectly well last night. will try CSS and the others today but currently re-installing Sim2 and then the other games I have, thankfully i had not got round to reinstalling everything I own

hey Maj
cant say the OS has given me any headaches. drivers for gfx card and sound have been good, altho i have uninstalled my razer barracuda soundcard due to lack of decent driver support.
i have 4gb ram, and the same nvidia card as you so its good toknow it can use it all when needed.
I have had some issues which i never had with XP but nothing too scary and I also think the lack of bios updates for this motherboard are a real shame, when the dude i bought it from got it, it was nearly £300 and there has not been a single bios update which is terrible

so rig is a little buggy, but i put this down to mobo.

nice PC you will have, had my hands on one of those Zalman coolers, they are VERY heavy so careful when you install. i stuck with the Arctic 7 cooler nice and light and very effective, but the fan on my cpu is rarely on due to the case being super and having 5 fans in it.

good luck with the build, you have done the hard bit by flashing the bios, just download your drivers and go for it, and remember install in this order
Operating system
Chipset
gfx
windows update
other drivers.
I have a 250gb HDD which has a 40gb C drive for the OS, a seperate HDD for steam games and the rest of the 250gb partitioned. makes it easier to look after things.

hi guys

have been thinking of upgrading to vista 64 for a while now ,,

i currently run vista 32 ultimate on my pc and am not sure if it would be of any benifit changing to 64bit

my current system is

striker 2 formula mobo
2 x 150 wd raptor hd running raid
4gb ocz nvidia sli ready 8500 @ 1066 memory 4 x 1 gb strips
2 x 8800 gts 640 gfx cards running sli mode(asus)
e6850 cpu
ocz 750watt sli ready psu
xfi sound blaster extreme gamer sound card
2 x dvd drivers + 1 floppy
lg 24" monitor running @ 1920 by 1200
saitek gaming keyboard and g5 mouse
z4 speakers

now ive had vista since day 1 and ive had alot of problems with drivers and such from the start (but everything running smother nowadays with the release of updated bios and drivers alike )

i was thinking of moving to vista 64 as i would like to upgrade the machine to 8gb of memory 4 x 2gb strips

but am not sure if there would be enough of a performance gain to justify the extra expence ,

what do you guys think do you feel it would be better running 64bit on my system or would you leave it as it is ?

also dunk how did you find css on 64bit ?

your OS can only adress a max of 4gb ram. and from what i understand that is ALL the memory so
4gb DDR2
1.3gb GFX
and whatever your virtual memory is

upgrade my friend, but as before make sure there are 64 versions of your drivers available, for these components i think you will be okay.

hi dunk

got a couple of questions dunk m8

vista 64 seems to now have the drivers i would need to reinstal , would there be any benifits to going for vista 64 over vista 32

would there be a decent performance gain if i was to upgrade my memory to 8gb 8500 1066 on 64bit from the 4gb 8500 1066 on 32bit

also keep hearing how good my motherboard is to overclock but as ive never done anything like this before , so 1 is overclocking easy and 2 would there be any improvements to my system if overclocked ?

sorry guys am a complete noob when it comes to these sort of things

i can build a pc and instal everything but things ive never done like overclocking just scare me incase i blow up my computer
